Jeremy commenced his career spending seven years in electronics R&D in UK south coast small to medium size companies, in which he reached the position of Senior Development Engineer developing electronic instruments and marine autopilot and navigational systems. In 1987 he accepted a contract research post with Southampton University Electrostatics Research Group. His research into measurement of electrostatic discharge ignition of explosible materials, became the subject of his PhD. This work investigated capacitive systems such as metal objects and the human body as sources of potentially incendive electrostatic discharges (ESD).
During further contracts at Southampton he gained considerable experience in electrostatics research and consultancy. From 1991 to 1994 he specialised in Finite Element Analysis electrostatics computer aided design, using Vector Fields Opera FE software to investigate electrostatic fields, potentials and current flow in particulate layers leading to ignition conditions.
In August 1994 Jeremy joined ERA Technology Ltd., where he led the Electrostatics and Dielectrics Section, working extensively on electrostatics R&D project and consultancy activities. He undertook a wide variety of electrostatics applications development and consultancy work, including electrostatic damage prevention in the electronics industry, ESD in EMC, environmental electrostatics, and electrostatic explosion hazards.
Jeremy brings his dual experience in electronic design and development and electrostatics to benefit capacitive sensing and measurement projects. His Finite Element electrostatic field modelling experience is applied in development of new applications such as electrode systems for capacitive sensing applications, aiding visualisation and optimisation of electric field patterns and performance before prototype construction. Jeremy's ESD research experience has also combined with his electronics background to offer considerable insight into prevention of ESD damage and interference to electronics systems.
Jeremy is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and is Chairman of the Electrostatics Group of the Institute of Physics, regularly speaking as part of their seminar programme. He has contributed to the British Standards GEL15/4 committee working on BS 7506:1995 Methods for measurements in electrostatics, and as a member of the BSI panels GEL101 (Handling of electrostatic sensitive devices) and GEL 601 (Control of undesirable static electricity). In 1996 Jeremy joined the International Electrotechnical Committee TC101 working group WG6, contributing as the UK principal expert on electrostatic discharge modelling. He is Chairman of IEC TC101, commencing this post in April 2000.
Jeremy formed Electrostatic Solutions Ltd in March 1998, to provide a wide range of electrostatics Consultancy and R&D services with a stated mission of "excellence in electrostatic technology expertise providing client oriented solutions".
Jeremy regularly presents his well established training courses at both public and private venues. These training courses include:
